Marte, an impending free agent, was recently featured by CBS Sports as the eighth best possible trade candidate. Here’s what we wrote at the time:

The Miami Marlins have reportedly offered Starling Marte an extension worth $50 million over three or four years. It would seem too team-friendly to make a deal, but perhaps the Marlins can close the gap between now and the deadline. If not, he’s going to make a lucrative fare. Marte is also playing a good center field, which means he is a legitimate all-round contributor.

Injury News

MLB Network reports John Heyman on Friday agreed to a four-year, $78 million contract with the Mets.

The move was a very busy day in Queens which also saw the team land both Eduardo Escobar and Marc Canha. Marte is the biggest name of the bunch and one of the biggest rewards available in free agency. He’s already 33 years old, so he can’t offer the team any more high-end seasons, but he was one of the best players in the league in 2021, a year in which he scored a career-best 5.5 FWAR. His 134 wRC, the product of a .310/.383/.458 Slash line, was also a career best. That number should be taken a step back next season with his .372 BABIP, though his excellent pace (which helped him steal a league-leading 47 bases) meant he had to post a BABIP well above the league average. Should be able to.
