There will be no repeat winners at this year’s PGA Championship. The PGA of America announced that Phil Mickelson, who has not been seen in the PGA program since November, was initially off the field after being listed among the expected participants.

Mickelson is tied to Saudi Arabia-based LIV golf startup, and could be dropped from the PGA Tour if he chooses to go down that route. Mickelson is the current winner of the PGA Championship after the lefty claimed his second career win at the tournament in 2021.

But there will be another legendary golfer to watch during the 2022 PGA Championship in Southern Hills. Tiger Woods will be making only his second major appearance since his fatal car accident in February 2021. He made his comeback at the 2022 Masters, where he made a hot start and made the cut, but fell significantly after the first two rounds.

Ahead of the PGA, Jon Rahm and Scotty Scheffler are listed as the starting favorites to win, with Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas not far behind.

There are two players who stick out as solid winning bets for this weekend’s head: Justin Thomas (1200) and Victor Hovland (2500). Both check all the boxes we’re looking for at the Southern Hills Country Club course.

Thomas is in the top five in SG:OTT, top 10 in scratching off the rough and is the best one-putter on the PGA Tour, with a one-put percentage of just under 46. His approach game is the weakest part of his arsenal, but he’s still ranked 27th in the SG:APR, so he has the tools he needs to challenge for his second win in the Majors.

Hovland comes with both a bit more risk and a bit more value. The 24-year-old has never performed better than 12th in the Majors and his best performance in the PGA Championship was T-30 in 2021. That said, he has a top-three approach game, is ranked 12th in SG:OTT and is a top-five scrambler from the rough.

Hovland, like Thomas, has a weak part of his game, and that is his one-putting percentage. Still, Hovland is good enough in that category—he ranks 28th—to have quality outings in this major. He’s had hot put streaks before, so maybe he can get his stroke on time in Tulsa.
