Calvin Ridley: Suspension| Suspended| Gambling| Contract

Monday’s proposed six-game suspension for quarterback Deshan Watson gives the Browns an idea that they are likely to activate Deshan Watson on their roster, but what about the Falcons with Calvin Ridley?

Ridley, Atlanta’s first-round NFL draft pick in 2018, is serving a suspension until at least the end of this season for gambling on NFL games.

What really happened to Ridley?
In March, five months after Ridley walked away from the team saying he needed to focus on his mental health, the NFL announced that Ridley would be allowed to gamble on NFL games until at least the end of this season. will be suspended. A source told The Athletic at the time of the suspension that three bets were involved in the Falcons game after he withdrew from the team. Although the NFL’s individual conduct policy permits a degree of punishment, penalties for gambling are outlined in the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

Suspended

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley is the player to miss the most games on the suspended list for 2022.

The NFL indefinitely suspended the former Alabama standout on March 7 for betting on league games. The NFL said the gambling activity occurred during a five-day period in November while Ridley was on the Falcons’ non-football injury list and was off the team.

Ridley will be eligible to file for reinstatement on February 15, 2023.

No player suspended by the NFL for gambling has missed less than one season.

Ridley is the most recent player from an Alabama high school or college to violate NFL rules and receive a suspension from the league. Players with Alabama football roots have been suspended for a variety of legal troubles and drug violations and other offenses, including a two-game suspension imposed on the Green Bay Packers nose by NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, “Charles” To Mean” he slammed the Chicago Bears after dealing with Martin. Quarterback Jim McMahon takes the field during an interception return on November 23, 1986.

Gambling

According to the league and its suspension guidelines gambling is one of the worst crimes a player or NFL coach or staff member can commit. Players caught betting are usually dismissed for the entire season. But players who are caught beating up their spouses or significant others are usually suspended for a few games. McCarthy says the NFL spoke with domestic violence experts to come up with its policy, saying the deportation decision after a first offense could have “unintended consequences that could negatively affect the family.” (A second domestic disturbance would result in lifelong exile.)

Like the MLB, the NFL believes that gambling is the biggest threat to the sport. For years Goodell was against sports betting. “I think we still strongly oppose legalized sports gambling [among proprietorships],” the commissioner said at a press conference in March 2017. “The integrity of our sport is No. 1. We will not compromise on that.”

Now that sports betting is legal in 31 states, and the NFL has official commercial partnerships with several sports betting companies, including Caesars, FanDuel and DraftKings, the league has completely gone into gambling. Hardly anyone can turn on the TV these days and the Manning family can’t be seen joking with Caesar himself for supporting the Caesars gaming app. Peyton and Eli Manning also hosted a special VIP viewing party for Super Bowl LVI at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the site of this year’s big game.

Contract

Ridley, a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, was still on his rookie contract in 2021. He signed a $10.9 million four-year deal with the Falcons after he was selected with the 26th overall pick in 2018.

Ridley was to play in the final year of his rookie contract in 2022 – a fifth-year option worth just over $11.1 million. However, given his suspension, that period will be deferred to 2023. They will not be paid in 2022 and will have to wait an additional year before hitting free agency as a result.

Ridley’s fifth-year option is also non-guaranteed. As such, the Falcons can part with him without paying him if they decide to trade or release him before the 2023 NFL season.
