Stanislas “Stan” Wawrinka (born 28 March 1985) is a Swiss professional tennis player. He reached a career-high level for the first time on 27 January 2014 in the world number three Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles rankings.  Highlights of his career include three Grand Slam titles, the 2014 Australian Open, the 2015 French Open and the 2016 US Open, where he defeated the world No. 1 player in the final on all three occasions. Other achievements include reaching the final of the 2017 French Open, winning the ATP Tour Masters 1000 title at the 2014 Monte-Carlo Masters, and reaching three other Masters finals (2008 in Rome, 2013 Madrid and 2017 Indian Wells). Representing Switzerland, Wawrinka won the gold medal in doubles with teammate Roger Federer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and was also instrumental in the Swiss team’s victory at the 2014 Davis Cup.

Former world number 3 Stan Wawrinka has hinted that retirement is near after a premature exit from the US Open.

Former US Open champion Stan Wawrinka has hinted he was close to retirement after being forced to abandon his first-round match at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday morning.

The Swiss giants were trailing 4-6, 6-7 against France’s Corentin Moutet when they shook hands after a second-set tiebreak, prematurely ending the competition on Court 5.

Moutet’s record against the former world No. 3 improves to 3–0.

After parting ways with Andy Murray’s coach Jan de Witt after a failed test, he is now set to reappoint Stan Wawrinka’s coach Dani Valverdu on another trial.

At the Australian Open, three-time Grand Slam champion Murray defeated world number 21 Nikoloz Basilashvili in a thrilling five-set bout that lasted just under four hours.

Murray then went on to lose in the second round to Japanese qualifier Taro Daniels in straight sets. Murray called the loss “not good enough” and said “making the second round of the Slam is not something that motivates them.”
