Romeo Doubs endured a difficult start to his New England Patriots career after a costly fourth-quarter drop contributed to the team’s 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL season opener.
With the game tied at 10-10 late in the fourth quarter, Doubs had an opportunity to make an important play for the Patriots. However, he was unable to secure a pass from quarterback Drake Maye that would have moved the chains and extended the drive.
After the game, Doubs took responsibility for the mistake and acknowledged that he needed to be more focused.
“I just wasn’t locked in enough,” Doubs said after the game. “That’s all. Video speaks for itself. And like I said, I’ll be better.”
Romeo Doubs Struggles in Patriots Debut
The Patriots expected Doubs to provide another reliable option in their receiving corps after signing him to a four-year, $68 million contract during free agency.
Instead, the Romeo Doubs debut was a quiet one. He was targeted three times against Seattle but did not record a reception.

Maye completed 10 of his first 12 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown, while A.J. Brown led the Patriots in receiving during the early stages of the contest.
That limited involvement made Doubs’ lack of production even more noticeable, particularly given the size of his new contract.

Despite the disappointing opener, it would be premature to judge Doubs based on one game.
The wide receiver enters New England after a productive 2025 season with the Green Bay Packers. He finished that campaign with 55 receptions for a career-best 724 yards and six touchdowns across 16 games.
Doubs also showed strong hands throughout the season, recording only three drops on 85 targets.
Those numbers help explain why the Patriots invested heavily in him during the offseason.
He also impressed during New England’s training camp, making several plays and appearing to build chemistry within the Patriots offense.
A.J. Brown Injury Could Increase Doubs’ Role
One of the biggest factors that could affect Doubs moving forward is the status of A.J. Brown.
Brown left the Patriots’ season opener in the third quarter with an ankle injury. If the star wide receiver is forced to miss time, New England could need Doubs to take on a much larger role.
That would give Doubs an immediate opportunity to respond to his difficult debut.
Rather than allowing the drop to define his Patriots tenure, Doubs can use the upcoming games to rebuild confidence and demonstrate why New England gave him a lucrative contract.

For Doubs, the priority will be simple: regain his rhythm, earn more opportunities and make the most of his targets.
His own comments suggest he understands the mistake and is already focused on correcting it. While the opening night performance was disappointing, his previous production indicates that he has the ability to become a major contributor for New England.
