Contract

Paul Millsap: Contract| Wingspan| Son| Wife| Trade

The move preceded Milsap opting out of the final year of his contract with the Atlanta Hawks.

A four-time All-Star and member of the 2015–16 All-Defensive Second Team, he spent his first seven seasons in the league with the Utah Jazz and last four with the Hawks. He is a night-double threat due to his rebounding ability, but he is best known for his scoring touch, which averages 15 or more points a night after developing into a near-lock. .

He scored a career-best 18.1 with the Hawks in 2016-17, along with 7.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.1 three-pointers in 34.0 minutes. Last summer the Boston Celtics demonstrated he could lift heavy offensive loads even at age 32. His ability to hit three-pointers, knock down mid-range shots and attack blocks undoubtedly contributed to his new deal with Denver.

Milsap has 87 career postseason appearances on his resume, so he will provide the lead to Denver with Nikola Jokic on offense for extended stretches.

The ring has been the biggest shortcoming of Milsap’s career, but the Nuggets haven’t even reached the playoffs since the 2012–13 season. They will rely heavily on him in pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop with the likes of Jamal Murray and Gary Harris to help guide them to the postseason.

While Dali faces a formidable challenger in the Western Conference, Milsap makes him an even more formidable threat and punches him in the front court with Jokic.

Wingspan

Paul Millsap: Contract| Wingspan| Son| Wife| Trade

He has a 6’11 wingspan, per Draft Express, which is huge in most contexts, but not a super-sized world of NBA paint. When matched against the best power in the world, he is going to suffer a significant length loss, a problem that can affect his play on both sides of the ball.

In almost any basketball context, it is helpful to have longer arms than your opponent. A person with longer arms can shoot from the top of his defender. In the case of defense, he can play a step forward and still counter the other person’s shot. He has an easy time reaching the rebounds and shaking hands in the lanes. The closer you get to the basket, where there is less room to maneuver, the more important this becomes.

Trade

One of the players you could say has really fallen around the NBA this season is also the one who was the subject of various Bulls rumors last season. The Bulls seemed to be in the running to sign former Atlanta Hawks and Denver Nuggets four-time All-Star power forward Paul Milsap before he was eventually selected to join the Brooklyn Nets. Now there should be another shot for the Bulls to roster Milsap in Chicago as the trade deadline approaches next month. The Nets are likely going to make Milsap available on the trade deadline of February 10, given the lack of a role with the team as of late.

This was confirmed roughly 10 days ago as a report by Shams Charania of The Athletic/Stadium on Twitter suggests the Nets may be buying Milsap next week. Shams previously reported that the Nets had “agreed” to essentially find a new home for Milsap so that he could “make a big contribution” to his potential winning efforts this season.
