NFL free agency: Start| Latest signings| Trades| Cuts| Rumors
The 2022 NFL off season is officially upon us. Several big-name quarterbacks found new homes ahead of the kickoff of the legal loophole period on Monday, but now dozens of notable veterans are actually coming to market, free to negotiate with other teams. From blockbuster moves to bargain-bin shopping, we’ve got you covered with a running tracker for each team’s 2022 additions, including outside signings and trade acquisitions.
Start
The trade market has cooled a bit since those deals. However, quarterbacks like Deshan Watson and Jimmy Garoppolo are still available, so we’ll definitely see some more trades as the NFL goes free agency.
Of course, there’s also the free agent part of free agency. There’s not a Tom Brady-type prize this season—well, until he’s back, at least—but there are plenty of quality playmates available at the receiver, on defense, and along the offensive line. Jesse Jackson, Von Miller, Alan Robinson, and Tyrone Matthews highlight the most recognizable names on the market, but there’s a lot of talent in the top 50 available free agents.
The NFL’s so-called legal loophole period begins at noon ET on Monday, March 14. At that point, we’ll start to see deals put together as teams tackle the next step in roster building.
The Sporting News will track all notable NFL free agent signings and trades during the 2022 NFL off-season.
Latest signings
NFL free agency officially begins at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday, which coincides with the start of the new league year. But first, we have two days of legal talks, when teams and free agents can agree on the terms of the new deals (and then officially sign them on Wednesday).
We have already navigated a range of off-season activity including the start of franchise tag periods, trade agreements, extensions and of course contract agreements. Some teams land unhappy veterans and unfriendly contracts under salary limits and perhaps there is room to add new players. Some teams made bold moves, especially in the quarterback market. And now the agreed deals will start.
What more excitement awaits in free agency? Which teams will be most active in free agency? What are we hearing on the business front this week? Will there still be more movement of signal callers?
We’re tracking every notable NFL free-agent agreement, trade, deduction and offseason retirement, with the most recent moves to top.
Trades
The first day of the NFL’s legal loophole period marks a fresh start, as teams have the opportunity to negotiate with impending free agents before the new league year begins at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 16.
Teams that finished at the bottom of the standings in the previous season can make changes that give immediate results. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the club that spent the most in free agency in each of the last six years had at least three wins in the following season.
Last week, a handful of teams inked blockbuster trade deals and re-signed key players. In the coming days, some of the biggest free agents will be coming up with new teams on big time contracts.
We’ll grade Monday’s notable free-agent moves, based on roster fit between player and club, along with details of the reported signings.
Cuts
NFL teams have until 4 p.m. on March 16 to fall under the NFL’s salary cap, which is thought to be set at $208.2 million in 2022. This means that between now and then, dozens of players will cut down on money-saving moves. Keep up on the latest with Pro Football Network’s 2022 NFL Cut Tracker.
