Biography:

  1. Milkha Singh is a former Indian track and field sprinter who was the first Indian male athlete to win an individual athletics gold medal at a Commonwealth Games.
  2. Nick name given by Milkha as a ‘Flying Sikh’—a title bequeathed to him by the former President of Pakistan, General Ayub Khan—he is highly respected for his sporting achievements.
  3. He has made his motherland proud by winning several Gold medals in international sporting events like the Commonwealth Games.
  4. And Asian Games. Milkha struggle the 400m race at the 1960 Olympic Games as one of the favorites and had even led the race till the 200m mark before he lost his speed and other runners overtook him.
  5. Sadly, the contender for Gold couldn’t even win a Bronze! Yet even in losing he set an Indian national record for 400m.
  6. This man’s story is one of hope and inspiration. As a teenager he witnessed the massacre of his whole family in front of his eyes.

Childhood:

Milkha Singh lost his parents in the Partition of India and the chaos that ensued. He reached India from Pakistan in the cross border trains carrying refugees.

Achievements:

Due to the time period of 1958 alone, he won many major events. He won the Gold medals in the 200m and 400m competitions at the Asian Games and Gold at the 440 yards event in Commonwealth Games.

  •  Milkha earned his achievement Padam Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, in 1959 for his glorious achievements in the field of sports.
  • He won Gold medals in 400m and 4x400m relay in 1962 Asian Games.

Personal life:

After struggle to his life meet with Nirmal kaur, the captain of the Indian women’s volleyball team in 1955 and married her in 1962.
The couple has three daughters and one son. The son of Milkha is Jeev Milkha Singh is a famous golfer.
In 1999, the couple adopted the seven year old son of a soldier who died in the Battle of Tiger Hill.
Milkha Singh has donated all his medals to the nation which were first displayed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi before being moved to a sports museum in Patiala.
He invented the Milkha Singh Charitable Trust in 2003 with the aim of helping needy sportspersons.

Difficulties:

He has always believed in himself and in hard work; He firmly believe that hard work never fails.

He used to train for 7 hours everyday; He sometimes felt that he would drop dead while training.

There have been times when he was put on oxygen in the hospital as he would occasionally faint after training. All he  knew was that there would be no stopping me once he started running.

The son of Milkha Singh is Jeev Milkha Singh. Jeev Milkha Singh is an Indian professional golfer who became the first player from India to join the European Tour in 1998.

He has won four events on the European tour, becoming the most successful Indian on the tour.

He was the first Indian golfer to reach the top 100 of the official world golf rankings in October 2006. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri’s civilian honor in 2007.
