A member of the Alabama A&M University football team, who suffered a head trauma during a football competition in October 2013, passed away on Wednesday night. This was confirmed by a Jefferson County, Alabama deputy coroner on a Friday.

Medrick Burnett Jr, who played as a raw redshirt freshman for Alabama A&M, got the head injury during the Magic City Classic which was played on October 26 against Alabama State according to the Associated Press. Deputy Coroner AJ Clifton declined to provide more particulars, however he explained that a media notice is in the works and will be distributed on Monday.

A spokesperson from the athletic department of Alabama A&M did not answer immediately when contacted for comments on Friday.

Alabama A&M stated that Burnett had passed away on Wednesday morning, but then retracted the announcement a few hours later upon discovering that he was still alive. They later said that they were “originally informed by a close relative on Tuesday night,” before being in touch with UAB Hospital official.

While taking part against Alabama state during the magic city classic, Burnett got a head injury. As per a GoFundeMe post by Dominance James, the sister of Burnett, he was left unconscious and vacated brain bleed and swelling of the brain. He also had a craniotomy on an emergency basis.

On Wednesday, Alabama A&M University reported Burnett’s demise, but the university later on withdrew the announcement. In a statement, the university said it was sorry about the mix-up.

“We would like to offer our sincerest apologies for the false report; nevertheless, we take absolute delight in the fact that Medrick is safe.”
