Kirk Ferentz Suspended: Report| Reddit| Reason
Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz and assistant John Budmire have been suspended for the Hawkeyes’ season opener in the fall of 2022 as part of fines imposed by the school for recruiting violations.
Ferentz, the longest-tenured coach in FBS, having led Iowa since the 1999 season, pleaded guilty to a Level II violation for contacting a player and his family before entering the transfer portal.
“I often tell my players to follow the rules, and in this case, I didn’t.” Ferentz said in a statement released Thursday. “In 26 years as the head coach at Iowa – and in more than four decades as a coach – this is my first potential Level II NCAA violation. I made a mistake and would like to apologize to our players, university leadership and our Hawkeye football fans. I know Coach Budmire shares those same sentiments.”

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and an assistant coach will be suspended for the No. 25 Hawkeyes’ opener against Illinois State on August 31 due to a violation during a player’s recruitment.
Iowa athletic director Beth Goetz said Thursday that the suspensions of Ferentz and wide receivers coach John Budmire were self-imposed. Assistant defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Seth Wallace was named assistant head coach in January and will fill Ferentz’s role for the game against the Redbirds.
“There’s a line there,” Ferentz said in a news conference. “I crossed that line.”
Ferentz informed his staff and players Thursday morning of the penalty, which includes the loss of a week of off-campus recruiting.
“The main thing is — I tell our players we follow the rules,” Ferentz said. “In this specific case, I didn’t do that. I made a mistake in the recruiting process.”
