Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs entered a no contest plea Thursday in Wisconsin after facing misdemeanor charges stemming from an alleged domestic incident earlier this year.
Jacobs pleaded no contest to charges of battery and criminal damage to property in Brown County Court. The plea brings a resolution to the criminal case while also leaving the Packers star facing potential consequences from the NFL.
What Is a No Contest Plea?
A no contest plea, also known as nolo contendere, means the defendant does not admit guilt but agrees not to contest the charges. In many situations, the court can still impose penalties as it would following a guilty plea.
In Jacobs’ case, the court accepted his plea under several conditions. He must avoid future criminal activity, have no contact with the alleged victim, complete counseling, remain under supervision and pay restitution.
Jacobs was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine for the misdemeanor battery charge.

The case stems from an alleged incident at Jacobs’ home on May 23. According to the criminal complaint, a woman was attempting to leave his garage when Jacobs allegedly grabbed her and threw her to the ground, causing her to hit her head.
The Brown County district attorney previously said surveillance footage from the garage corroborated the alleged victim’s account.
Jacobs was arrested in May and was initially booked on five charges. His latest court appearance resolved the charges of battery and criminal damage to property through the no contest agreement.
Criminal Damage Charge Could Be Dismissed
As part of the agreement, the criminal damage to property count will be suspended for 12 months. If the conditions of the agreement are satisfied, that charge will then be dismissed.
Jacobs’ attorney said the agreement resolves the matter and noted the running back’s history of community work during his NFL career.
Jacobs also addressed the court, saying he understood the seriousness of the situation and took responsibility for his conduct.
What Does the No Contest Plea Mean for Josh Jacobs and the Packers?
Although the criminal case has reached a resolution, Jacobs’ football status remains uncertain.
The NFL placed Jacobs on the Commissioner’s Exempt List on Aug. 30. That designation prevents him from practicing or playing for Green Bay until the league removes him from the list.
The NFL can also impose a separate suspension under its personal-conduct policy. Under the league’s collective bargaining agreement, a domestic-violence violation can result in a six-game suspension, although the ultimate discipline depends on the league’s review.
The timing is particularly significant because Jacobs’ court hearing was moved up to Sept. 10, only three days before the Packers were scheduled to open their season against the Minnesota Vikings.
Why the Plea Matters

His current situation, however, means the Packers could have to prepare for games without their starting running back if the NFL keeps him on the Commissioner’s Exempt List or later issues a suspension.
For now, the no contest plea resolves the immediate criminal proceedings, while Jacobs’ NFL future for the start of the season remains subject to the league’s decision.
