Jonas Vingegaard will not race again in 2026 after the two-time Tour de France champion was ruled out for the remainder of the season while recovering from a broken collarbone.
The Visma-Lease a Bike rider suffered the injury during the Tour de France and underwent surgery afterward. While there had been hope that Vingegaard could return later in the year, including at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, his recovery has delayed the start of his training.
Jonas Vingegaard Ends 2026 Season Early
Vingegaard crashed on Stage 15 of the 2026 Tour de France while negotiating a tight right-hand bend after a roundabout. He landed heavily on his shoulder and suffered a broken collarbone.
The injury ended his hopes of challenging for another Tour de France title. Tadej Pogačar eventually claimed his fifth yellow jersey, while Vingegaard began his recovery following surgery.
Visma-Lease a Bike has now confirmed that the Danish star will not return to competitive racing this year.
Vingegaard said he had already been scheduled for a recovery period after the Tour, but the collarbone injury has delayed the beginning of his training. His priority is now to prepare properly for the 2027 season rather than rush back for a late-2026 appearance.
No World Championships Return for Vingegaard
One of the biggest consequences of the decision is Vingegaard’s absence from the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal in September.
A possible return at the World Championships had been considered following his Tour de France crash. However, his recovery timeline means he will not be able to reach the required level to compete against the world’s best riders.
His absence will be significant because Pogačar is expected to defend his world title. The two riders have been among the defining figures in professional stage racing, making Vingegaard’s absence another major storyline heading into the championships.
A Remarkable 2026 Season Comes to an Early End
Despite the disappointing finish, Vingegaard’s 2026 campaign already includes several major achievements.
The Danish rider won Paris-Nice and the Volta a Catalunya before adding the Giro d’Italia to his palmarès. His Giro victory was especially significant because it made him only the eighth male rider to win all three Grand Tours.
Vingegaard had previously won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023, while his Giro triumph added another major accomplishment to his career.
His 2026 season therefore ends with an impressive collection of victories, even though the Tour de France crash prevented him from completing the campaign as planned.
Visma-Lease a Bike Prioritizes 2027
The team’s decision reflects a long-term approach to Vingegaard’s recovery.
Visma-Lease a Bike racing head Marc Reef indicated that Vingegaard had already completed a demanding number of racing days during the season. Combined with the collarbone fracture, the team believes concentrating on recovery and preparation for 2027 is the best option.
Rather than setting an aggressive return date, Vingegaard and the team will now work together to determine his training schedule and objectives for next season.
That approach could allow the 29-year-old to rebuild gradually and avoid the pressure of trying to regain peak form during the final months of 2026.
What Comes Next for Jonas Vingegaard?
Vingegaard’s immediate objective is recovery, followed by a controlled return to training.
His specific goals for 2027 have not yet been finalized. The Tour de France would naturally remain a major target given his history, but his success in other stage races could encourage Visma-Lease a Bike to create a different programme.
His 2026 Giro d’Italia victory also showed that Vingegaard can succeed outside the Tour-focused schedule that has defined much of his recent career.
For now, however, there is no reason to rush that decision. The priority is allowing his collarbone to heal fully and rebuilding his fitness before returning to competition.
Vingegaard’s Focus Is on 2027, Not Retirement
The announcement also provides clarity about Vingegaard’s future.
There had been speculation about whether the severity of his Tour de France crash could lead to an early end to his career. Instead, Vingegaard and Visma-Lease a Bike have made it clear that the focus is on the 2027 season.
That means cycling fans can expect the two-time Tour de France champion to return to competition after completing his recovery.
For now, Vingegaard’s 2026 season is over. His next chapter will be about recovery, rebuilding and preparing for another attempt at cycling’s biggest goals in 2027.
