Cleveland made its last few decisions before losing 3-1 to the Rangers on Saturday at Surprise Stadium to cut its Spring Training roster to 28. Guardians manager Terry Francona told outfielder/first baseman Josh Naylor (right ankle) that he would start the year on the 10-day injured list to get a handful of extra games under his belt in a more controlled environment than the big leagues. This opened a spot for outfield prospect Steven Cowan to make his first opening day roster.

“The tough conversations we have — and some of them are really tough — some of them like Kwan or [Conor] Pilkington, God dang, man, it can tie you up in a good way,” Francona said.

MLB announced on Thursday that teams will be able to carry 28 players (29 for doubleheaders), up from 26 from Opening Day until May 1. Additionally, there will be no limit to the number of pitchers they can carry as part of an expanded 28. -man roster. However, rosters will revert to 26 players with a maximum 13-pitcher on May 2.

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) — The Cleveland Guardians take the field for the first opening day of the new era with a roster full of new names.

The Guardians began the season against the Royals in Kansas City at 4:10 p.m. on the first pitch. on 7th April

Thanks to the 99-day MLB lockdown, teams are allowed 28 players on the opening day roster from May 1.

That number jumps to 29 for doubleheaders, but there’s no slate for parents until June 28.

Once May 2 arrives, the roster will be trimmed to the traditional 26.

MLB puts no limit on how many pitchers a team can carry on an expanded 28-player roster due to the shorter Spring Training.

The number of starting pitchers this season is the same as last for Guardians, but the club added one more reliever than in 2021.

Guardians Beat reporter Mandy Bell said Bieber, Sivale, Plasack and Quantrill would be four-man rotations compared to the start of the season, leaving McKenzie piggybacking in Kansas City.

The Guardians confirmed a week before Opening Day that Shane Bieber would take the mound at the start of his third straight Opening Day.

This is his relationship with Bob Feller for the second-highest inaugural day starting before his 27th birthday (CC Sabathia and Willie Mitchell top with four each).

Due to the brief spring training, Bieber would be limited to about 60 pitches.

The 26-year-old 2020 Cy Young Award winner was limited to only 16 starts in the 2021 season after straining his right shoulder.
