The entire British class system worked to make Christmas Day a big deal for the wealthy elite. They split up at Christmas dinner for geese, turkey, and other birds cooked by the kitchen staff. In the years before the conveniences of the Industrial Revolution and technological advances, domestic workers worked hard to make all the preparations for the holidays. Messenger boys worked regularly and postmen delivered mail and packages throughout the year.
Boxing Day on 26 December gave the wealthy an opportunity to repay the time paid to their servants and merchants and small gift boxes filled with trinkets or coins as an appreciation for their service during the holiday and throughout the year. Servants and merchants also prepared gift boxes for their families.
