FIFA World Cup qualification is the process a national association football team goes through to qualify for the final tournament of the FIFA World Cup. Concacaf
On 10 July 2019, CONCACAF announced a restructured qualifying format for the World Cup.[2] After CONCACAF initially announced in March 2018 that they would use the CONCACAF Ranking Index to qualify for international tournaments. To determine the seeding of the teams, [3] it was determined that the FIFA rankings would be used instead.
Top-seeded Hexagonal Groups: The top 6 ranked CONCACAF teams, based on the June 2020 FIFA rankings, were to play home and away round-robin matches in a single group (often referred to as “hexagonal”). The top three teams would have qualified for the World Cup, and the fourth-placed team would advance to the CONCACAF play-off round.
Lower seeded group stage and knockout stage: the remaining CONCACAF teams (ranked 7 to 35 based on June 2020 FIFA rankings) divided into eight groups (five groups of four teams and three groups of three teams) for home play was to be done. -And away round-robin match. The winners of each group will advance to a knockout stage, which will include the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final which will be played in a two-legged home and away series. The winner of the knockout stage would also advance to the CONCACAF play-off round.
Play-off round: The fourth-placed team from the hexagonal group faces the winner of the knockout stage to advance to the Inter-Confederation play-off.
Asia
All 46 FIFA-affiliated nations from the AFC entered qualification. The FIFA World Rankings of April 2019 were used to determine which countries would compete in the first round. For seeding in the second round and third round draws, the most recent FIFA rankings prior to those draws will be used.
According to the combined format of the World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers, both Qatar (as the host country of the 2022 World Cup) and China PR (as the host country of the 2023 Asian Cup) also entered the second round of the qualifiers. [5]
Timor-Leste were banned from participating in Asian Cup qualification after a total of 12 ineligible players were found to field in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification matches among other competitions. [6] However, as FIFA did not ban them from the World Cup qualifiers, Timor-Leste were allowed to enter the competition, but were ineligible to qualify for the Asian Cup.
Africa
All 54 FIFA-affiliated football associations from the CAF entered the qualification. The FIFA World Rankings of July 2019 were used to determine which countries would compete in the first round. For seeding in the second and third round draws, the most recent FIFA rankings prior to those draws will be used.
Libya was threatened with an exit from the qualifiers if it failed to pay a loan to its former coach Javier Clemente. However, Libya followed suit after FIFA gave them a new deadline. [4] Sierra Leone also faced a possible boycott from the qualifiers due to the suspension of their football association. [5] However, the suspension was lifted by the FIFA Council on 3 June 2019.
