Contreras, the Cardinals’ most consistent hitter all season and an improved defensive catcher, left Tuesday’s game in obvious pain when he was hit by slugger J.D. The left arm was struck by a swing from Martínez. Contreras immediately screamed after being shot and fell to the ground, groaning in pain. He continued to hold his hand as he was led off the field by trainers. X-rays at Busch Stadium eventually revealed a fracture in Contreras’ left hand. He was placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday morning.

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras was forced to exit Tuesday night’s game against the New York Mets in the second inning (NYM-STL GameTracker) because of J.D. Martínez’s swing caught his left arm. Shortly thereafter the Cardinals announced that Contreras had a fractured left hand.

After the game, Contreras told reporters that he had been informed that he would be out at least six to eight weeks. Cardinals manager Ollie Marmol said Contreras could have surgery as early as Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, the Cardinals officially placed Contreras on the injured list and recalled 25-year-old catcher Pedro Paez in the same move.
