Neck
Moorhead senior defenseman and captain Will Borgen has a pretty good reason as to why he doesn’t feel any ill will toward the sport that nearly killed him. “I like hockey a lot,” Borgen said. “A skate to the neck? I can still play. It’s not that bad.”
Playing hockey in the spring in a U.S. tournament, Borgen went down to his knees after checking someone and felt a skater breeze by him in a pileup. He went back to the bench and told his coach current Bemidji coach Wade Chiodo he may have been cut. According to Borgen, that was about the time Chiodo “freaked out.”
Injury
The hits just keep on coming for the Buffalo Sabres. The team announced today that defenseman Will Borgen will be out six to eight weeks. He required surgery for a fractured forearm he suffered late in the game against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday afternoon.
The 24-year-old defender was a nice boost to the Sabres blue line and was about to be paired with Rasmus Dahlin. Now, he’ll be out until at least early April.
Contract
Defenseman Will Borgen is skipping his senior season at St. Cloud State after signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabres. Borgen’s contract with the Sabres won’t kick in until next season. He will finish this year playing for Buffalo’s minor league affiliate in Rochester, New York, after agreeing to sign an amateur tryout contract.
The deal was reached Sunday, three days after Borgen’s season ended when the top-ranked Huskies lost 4-1 to Air Force in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Scouting Report
Borgen Owns a very projectable (6-2) frame. Plays an aggressive brand of hockey, so physicality is part of the package here. Can produce decent offensive totals at lower levels. Needs to become a more consistent performer in order to maximize his appearances at the National Hockey League level. Also needs to fill out his frame and continue to get stronger for the highest level.
