Sjögren’s syndrome came into limelight when American tennis player Venus Williams announced that she was suffering from it.

What is Sjögren’s syndrome? How do you pronounce it anyway? And is there any treatment?

What is this?
Sjögren’s syndrome, also known as “Showgren’s syndrome”, is what doctors call a chronic systemic autoimmune disease. It occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks itself, destroying healthy tissue. It is chronic because it lasts for a long time, and systemic because it affects various organs.

It can occur on its own, when it is referred to as primary Sjögren’s syndrome, or with another autoimmune condition, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or systemic sclerosis, and is then called secondary or associated Sjögren’s syndrome. Like most autoimmune diseases, there is no cure.

Net worth 2022

In comparison, Venus has an estimated net worth of $95 million. This comes from on-court earnings of $42 million, with the rest coming from investments, projects and sponsorships. Williams’ older sister signed a deal with Reebok in 1995 at the age of 14 and has also advertised with Wilson, Tide, Kraft, Electronic Arts, Ralph Lauren and Lacoste during her career. In 2021 alone, Venus is projected to earn $11m through sponsorship deals.

Serena was last year’s second highest-paid female athlete in the world behind Naomi Osaka, although she was sidelined for the second half of the season due to an injury at Wimbledon. Forbes said Serena earned $45.9m in 2021, of which only $0.9m from court earnings, proof that both she and Venus have surpassed tennis to become cultural icons and business leaders. The sisters were also at the forefront of the campaign for pay equality in tennis and have been credited with helping to turn the tide of historical economic disparities in tennis and the sport in general.
