The rebooted USFL’s inaugural championship game had it all: great weather, a packed home, big plays and, most importantly, a thrilling game between the league’s top two teams. The night ended with the Birmingham Stallions, the league’s best team of all season, being crowned champions after a 33–30 win over the Philadelphia Stars.

Delayed 23–20, the Stallions took the lead for good on Victor Bolden’s touchdown reception near quarterback Alex McGaugh, playing to the relief of injured starter J’Mar Smith. Linebacker Scooby Wright’s six-by-six moments later proved to be the most important game of the game. Philadelphia, who finished the game with a backup quarterback after Kes Cooks injured his knee, came back with a late touchdown. But a missed conversion attempt after the score and an interception in the last minute sealed the fate of the Stars.

With the Games taking place over the weekend of the Fourth of July, it is fitting that there was a lot of fireworks, especially in the first half. The list of big plays that took place on Sunday night includes:

Jordan Suell’s 25-yard TD catch on the ensuing drive to Philadelphia.
Marlon Williams’ 41-yard TD catch in less than a minute gave the Stallions a 17-9 lead.
Scarbrough’s 70-yard run that set up Brandon Aubrey’s short FG in the final game of the first half.
A 34-yard catch from Dexter Williams on a screen pass that set up Suell’s second TD catch on the first drive of Philly’s second half.
Wright’s 46-yard pick-six with less than three minutes left.

Game

Dust settled on the USFL Championship Game, with the Birmingham Stallions taking on the Philadelphia Stars in a thriller. But that didn’t mean it was time to call it a night.

In fact, we were starting with a live postgame version of “The No. 1 Rank Show with RJ Young” on the field at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

There were many highlights from the show.

First, Scooby Wright and Bo Scarbrough stopped by to talk about the big game.

Both the players made an impact on the final result. Not only did Wright have three tackles, but he also came up with a play that essentially cooled the game, taking an interception back 46 yards for a touchdown.

“I was jumping out of my pants!” Scarabrough said of his reaction to Wright’s pick-six. “I felt like the defense was going to make a play, then Scooby came in with the interception. I was about to leave the stadium.”
