Post fight press conference:

When the rivals met for real at UFC 272, Covington used his advantage to get the final word on Masvidal, grinding out “Gambred” on the canvas. Covington’s other weapon – his insane pace – ensured a lopsided set of scorecards with “Chaos” earning a unanimous decision by scores of 49-46, 50-44 and 50-45.

The other big story of the night was the heart of short-notice replacement Renato Moicano, who hung in against ex-champ Rafael dos Anjos despite taking an inordinate amount of damage. The decision for dos Anjos wasn’t in doubt, but Moicano’s stock rose in the eyes of many of his colleagues.

This is a fight years in the making and carrying a tremendous amount of heat with it. Former training partners and “best friends,” Covington and Masvidal rose up the welterweight rankings together but their mutual success bred enmity which broke up their friendship and turned it into a bitter feud.

After years of trash-talking, the two will now finally settle their business in the cage. Covington is the former interim welterweight champion who has lost twice to welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, including a five-round decision loss back in November.

Colby Covington emerged victorious from his grudge match with Jorge Masvidal on Saturday at UFC 272.

In the long-awaited welterweight headliner, Covington (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) defeated his former roommate, teammate and training partner Masvidal (35-16 MMA, 12-9 UFC) by unanimous decision in the apex moment of their feud at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Masvidal has also fallen short against Usman twice, being on the receiving end of the 2021 Knockout of the Year at UFC 261. Both men are in desperate need of a win to stay relevant in the welterweight title picture.
