Trey Lance’s season is less than five full quarters in his first year as the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers.

Lance broke his right ankle with 2:20 and entered the first quarter of Sunday’s 27-7 win against the Seattle Seahawks. Backup Jimmy Garoppolo replaced Lance and ended the game, as he resumes duties starting with Lance now.

Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the injury and said Lance is scheduled for end-of-season surgery on Monday morning.

“It’s always tough, especially when it’s kind of big,” Shanahan said. “You feel so bad for someone. It’s sad but you don’t have time to sit there and think about it. You have to go back to the sport, and people have done a really good job. I’m really I am happy with the win, but after reaching the locker room it is a bit sad.”
