Penning reimagined his true freshman season in northern Iowa. As a redshirt sophomore, Penning started all 15 UNI games. He started five games in left tackle and one game in right tackle during his redshirt junior season, which was played in the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Penning entered the 2021 fall season as one of the highest-rated offensive tackles and FCS prospects for the 2022 NFL Draft. Penning’s younger brother, Jared, has been the starter next to him on the Panthers’ offensive line since his redshirt sophomore season.

Penning, a 6-foot-7, 325-pounder from Clear Lake, Iowa, was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award given to the nation’s top offensive player. He started all 12 games in his redshirt senior season in 2021. Penning was the team’s second pick in the first round as the Saints picked Ohio State receiver Chris Olev with the 11th pick.
