Old Klongunion Tommy Brown (2010) and Relentless Rovers have recently completed the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge Race, which covered 5,000 km across the Atlantic Ocean, setting an Irish record, and serving as a member of the Children’s Unit at Cork University Hospital. Much needed funds have been raised. Tommy’s ‘overjoyed and relieved mother’ Nikki gives an account of their great adventure.

The idea first came to Sean Underwood after reading a book about the race and, after finding three willing participants for the undertaking, the plan came together. Sean was Eoin O’Farrell’s classmate, and the pair had a certain degree of rowing experience. Pat O’Connor and Tommy were complete newbies. Needless to say, the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge [the flagship event in ocean sailing] is not for the faint-hearted. 32 boats took part in the annual race this year, departing the Canary Islands on 14 December and four did not make it across the finish line.

The four-man effort saw the rovers take it in shifts aboard their trusty craft, the Saoirse. In teams of two, they lined up for two hours to be allowed to sleep, wash and eat, before taking another two hours off. The boat itself has two cabins for sleeping and storage. The food was far from Michelin star quality, with 80% of his diet consisting of freeze-dried, 1000-calorie meals that require him to add water. “Some of it was delicious and some… not the best!”, said Tommy.
