Tom Aspinall’s difficult journey at the top of the UFC heavyweight division has taken another dramatic turn. The British fighter has vacated the UFC heavyweight title after remaining sidelined for nearly a year because of serious eye problems stemming from his controversial fight with Ciryl Gane.
Aspinall announced the decision on Monday, September 14, explaining that he has still not been medically cleared to return to competition. The former champion said stepping away from the belt does not mean he is walking away from MMA or his dream of fighting at the highest level.

The Tom Aspinall title situation became official after months of uncertainty surrounding his recovery. His first undisputed heavyweight title defense ended in a first-round no contest after multiple eye fouls during his fight with Ciryl Gane at UFC 321.
One particularly damaging eye poke left Aspinall unable to continue and eventually required surgery. According to Aspinall, his recovery has involved multiple procedures and consultations with doctors and specialists.
With his return date still unclear, Aspinall decided that holding onto the championship would unfairly delay the heavyweight division.
He explained that he did not want to prevent other fighters from having the opportunity to compete for the title.
Why Is Tom Aspinall Stepping Away?
Aspinall’s latest setback is another chapter in what has become an unusually frustrating UFC career.
His problems at the top began well before the eye injury. In 2022, Aspinall suffered a devastating knee injury during his fight with Curtis Blaydes in London, interrupting a rapid rise through the heavyweight rankings.
He eventually returned and became interim heavyweight champion, but his title situation remained complicated while waiting for then-champion Jon Jones.
Jones ultimately retired and vacated the championship, clearing the way for Aspinall to become the undisputed champion. However, the Briton’s reign lasted only until his unfortunate encounter with Gane.
Ciryl Gane Could Benefit From Aspinall’s Exit
The biggest beneficiary of Aspinall’s decision could be Ciryl Gane.
Gane recently defeated Alex Pereira to claim the interim heavyweight championship. With Aspinall no longer holding the undisputed belt, Gane is now in position to potentially become France’s first undisputed UFC champion.
That creates an ironic twist to Aspinall’s story.
The fight that sidelined Aspinall was already controversial because of the eye fouls, and now Gane could ultimately emerge with the heavyweight championship because Aspinall cannot currently compete.
Gane has also faced controversy of his own. During his fight with Pereira, his opponents and fans questioned whether some strikes landed illegally toward the back of the head.
Dana White and Eddie Hearn Add Another Layer
Aspinall’s title decision also comes amid an interesting relationship between UFC president Dana White and boxing promoter Eddie Hearn.
Aspinall signed with Hearn’s Matchroom Talent Agency earlier this year. White and Hearn have publicly clashed over several boxing-related issues, creating speculation about whether their rivalry could influence the UFC’s handling of Aspinall’s situation.
However, Aspinall made clear that his decision was driven by his health and his desire not to hold up the heavyweight division.
He also said the UFC and chief business officer Hunter Campbell had been kept informed throughout his medical treatment and had access to his tests and medical information.
Tom Aspinall Says He Is Not Finished
Despite relinquishing the championship, Aspinall has not announced his retirement.
The 33-year-old emphasized that leaving the title behind is different from leaving the sport. His immediate priority is getting healthy, particularly given the seriousness of his eye problems.
The situation has also generated criticism from some fans, particularly because Aspinall has frequently shared updates about his recovery. However, the fighter has argued that the complications have been caused by fouls that changed the direction of his career.
For Aspinall, the biggest goal now is simply returning to full health.

Aspinall’s departure creates another major shake-up in the UFC heavyweight division.
With the championship vacant and Gane holding the interim belt, the French heavyweight appears to be in the strongest position to fight for undisputed status. The UFC must now determine how it will officially structure the next heavyweight title fight.
For Aspinall, however, the immediate future is less about rankings and more about recovery.
After years of injuries, delays and controversial circumstances, the former champion faces another long road back. Yet his statement suggests that he still wants to compete once his doctors give him the green light.
