Stats

Boyle signed with the Green Bay Packers as a non-draft free agent on May 4, 2018. [5] [6] After an impressive pre-season, Boyle made it to the 53-man roster in September 2018 as the team’s third-string quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers and DeShon Keizer.[7]

Boyle did not play during the 2018 regular season. He saw his first professional playing time on October 20, 2019, during a 7-week win over the Oakland Raiders. Boyle took over for Rodgers during the final minutes of the game after the win was assured, kneeling the ball 3 times for -3 yards to end the clock. [8] He saw more extended time during a one-off Week 12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on November 24, 2019, completing his first NFL pass for backup tight end Robert Tonneen. He finished the game 3-of-4 for 15 yards. [9]

Boyle was to become a restricted free agent after the 2020 season, [10] but the team did not extend a tender for him at the start of the new league year, so he became an unrestricted free agent on March 17, 2021.

College

Boyle grew up in Middlefield, Connecticut, and attended Xavier High School in Middletown, Connecticut, where he won three championships under head coach Sean Marinan.

College Career
Playing for the Connecticut Huskies, Boyle started 10 games and then moved to Eastern Kentucky, where he started all 11 games as a redshirt senior and finished first in the passing yards in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Contract

Boyle is following the path set by Jamal Williams earlier this week as he signs a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions. Detroit needs Jared Goff’s backup following the release of veteran Chase Daniel this week, and Boyle will likely get a shot with the Packers’ NFC North rival.

Like so many young players and backup, Boyle was hurt by the lack of preseason games in 2020. According to Multiple Packers beat writers, they had an excellent training camp, but were unable to show it in game action. Boyle did well in the 2019 preseason, however, leading all qualifying quarterbacks with a passer rating of 112.9.

Still, although he has an extremely strong arm, Boyle has yet to demonstrate NFL-caliber accuracy and decision-making against starting defenses in regular season action. His performance in 2020 was limited to a knee at the end of blowouts and a dropback against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6, which resulted in him being thrown over a sack by Jason Pierre-Paul. Boyle’s only regular-season pass attempt came in a 2019 regular-season loss at San Francisco, when he completed three of four passes for 15 yards.
