Tee off
Tiger Woods entered the first round of the Masters on Thursday as he made a remarkable comeback after a car accident in February 2021 in which he suffered serious leg injuries.
After the first round of the 2022 Masters at the Augusta National Golf Club tournament was delayed due to bad weather in Augusta, Georgia, five-time Masters champion Woods played in Group 14 alongside South African Louis Osthuizen and Chilean Joaquin Niemann.
Dressed in a pink shirt, Woods’ name was announced as the crowd greeted him with thunderous applause. After hitting his opening drive, Woods got more enthusiasm from fans.
His drive was not perfect, although the 46-year-old did equalize on the first hole to the delight of the watching patrons.
Woods’ first birdie came on the sixth hole when his excellent tee shot left him a short put to shoot under par for the first time.
However, after bogeying in the eighth hole, Woods crossed the front-nine level.
He fell once again under par after a birdie on the par-five 13th hole, only to be later pegged at par level by a hole.
Woods displayed some of the struggles his illustrious career has made famous on the 16th hole, rolling in a difficult putt for another birdie – a trademark fistpump in celebration – to go down one to the delight of thousands.
Despite a wayward tee shot on the 18th hole, Woods managed to salvage a par, meaning he carded an under par 71, marking a solid return to competitive golf nearly 17 months later.
After his initial run, Woods said he was in “as much pain as he was feeling”, but admitted that getting back on the course was “wonderful”.
“I’ve been telling the team all week, it’s game time, it’s going to be a different deal,” he told the media. “My adrenaline will kick in. I’ll get into my own little world, and I’ll get behind it. It’s about the training we’ve done for the stamina to keep going.
What time does tee off tomorrow
In a shocking turn of events that some hadn’t seen before, Tiger Woods decided to win it at the 2022 Masters in an effort to win his 16th major championship, sixth green jacket, and 83rd PGA Tour event – almost 14. month later. Losing his right leg in a car accident. If his effort in Round 1 at Augusta National is any indication, Woods made the right decision.
While Tiger was not among the leaders after Thursday’s morning session, he emerged from Day T10 on the leaderboard after shooting 1 under 71. Woods leveled in his first five holes before scoring a birdie on the sixth. He alternated between even and 1 under for the duration of the round with a second set of five consecutive pars before a birdie on the 13th.
While crucial innings defined his round, a vigorous birdie on the 16th was the highlight of the afternoon. Woods knocked his tee shot from 29 yards out of the hole, lined up his put and ended a graceful effort punctuated by his signature fist pump to excite the crowd and put him under for the round. Equally returned. He scored in the final two holes – with another save in the 18th – to complete an old round that keeps him in contention despite his inability to separate from the pack.
