The 2022 PGA Championship kicks off with first round of action today, and some important story unfolds.

Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma is providing a tough test for the area with downwind a major factor. Making the course a driving competition calls for precise iron play and steady chipping around the greens.

Former PGA Championship winners John Daly, Shawn Michaels and Y.E. Yang was the first group off at 7 a.m. local time. But every morning the group was headed for the big one: Tiger Woods, Jordyn Spieth, and Rory McIlroy kicked off at 9:11 a.m. ET. All three have 22 big wins combined. Overall, Rory was having a day with that group.

The co-betting favorites, per BetMGM, are Jon Rahm and Scotty Scheffler (1200). Other top contenders are Justin Thomas, McIlroy, Colin Morikawa and Spieth. But he is far from the only big name on the field. Brooks Koepka is looking for his fifth Major, which will level him in his 15th match so far. Dustin Johnson wants No. 3, and Shane Lowry and Hideki Matsuyama lead the group in search of their second.

Tiger Woods is no stranger to Southern Hills Country Club. The last time the PGA Championship was in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was in 2007, with Woods hoisting the Wanamaker Trophy, the fourth win of his career.

On Thursday, Woods reappeared in his second major tournament appearance since his fatal crash in February 2021. He shot a 4 over 74 and was looking outside the cut line on Friday.

Woods made the cut at the 2022 Masters, but he leveled 13 overs for the tournament, moving him to 47th place.

The four PGA Championship victories of Woods’ career put him just one away from tying Jack Nicklaus for the major title.

Tulsa – It’s nothing personal. Tiger Woods made it abundantly clear at the PGA Championship Tuesday morning that his disagreement with Phil Mickelson, the defending champion, whose absence has dominated chatter in the Southern Hills, is an entirely difference of opinion.

Simply put: Phil Mickelson believes the current structure of the PGA Tour needs a comprehensive re-evaluation and is clear about what the future should look like. Woods disagrees.

“Phil has said some things that I think have pushed back a lot of us who are committed to the tour and the legacy of the tour,” Woods said, in vocals. Measured and careful with your action. “He’s taken some personal time, and we all understand that. But I think some of his views on how the tour should be run—there was a lot of disagreement.”

“But as we all know, as a professional, we miss him out here. He is a big draw for the game of golf. He is just taking his time and we all wish him the best of luck when he comes back. Obviously, our views will differ as to how he views the tour, and we will go from there.
