A plan that would see PGA Tour Stage 18 tournaments with 60 players and a $20 million purse was discussed earlier this week among an elite group of players, including Tiger Woods, in a meeting ahead of the BMW Championship.

Few details, by design, have emerged from the meeting, but two sources who spoke to each of the players who attended the meeting at the Htel du Pont told Sports Illustrated that the concept was one of several items discussed. And will likely be brought to PGA Tour Commissioner J. Monahan and Tour executives.

Championship

Tiger Woods is reportedly planning to play in the 2022 PGA Championship next month.

According to Golf Digest, a source at the Woods camp said Tiger will compete in the tournament “barring any setbacks” from injuries sustained in a car accident in February 2021.

Woods played at the Masters earlier this month, his first competitive tournament since 2020.

Impressively, Woods made the cut at the Masters, though he struggled over the weekend to finish 47th with a 13-over overall score.

Nevertheless, it was a huge achievement for Woods in his first tournament, as he was ahead of big names such as Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, Xander Schöffel, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Rose.

Woods, 46, suffered multiple broken bones in his feet during a 2021 crash, raising concerns about whether he would ever be able to play competitive golf again.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are launching a tech-infused golf league in partnership with the PGA Tour in which players will compete in six three-man teams in 15 regular-season matches and the playoffs beginning in January 2024.

The new league, TGL, will feature two-hour, 18-hole matches on a virtual course. Matches will take place on Monday night in prime time at custom-made venues at designated venues.

Renderings released by TGL on Wednesday indicate that the Venue will feature a simulator in which players will shoot long shots, along with an authentic green area for chipping and pouring.

Matches will likely be played between January and April, and each of the six teams will compete five times during the 15-week schedule.
