- Athletics is a sports which include events like running, jumping, throwing and walking etc.

History
- In the ancient times the man used arrow and throwing stone for hunting etc. The evidences of pre-historic period confirm that athletics events were important part of their life like survival of fitness, hunting for food, finding shelter, safe escape from dangerous animals etc.
- In this way the culture of Athletic events like running, jumping and throwing was formed. A primitive form was practised in Egypt more than 400 years ago. The Cretan (Greece) became the first to engage it in a systematical way around 1500 B.C.
- The word ‘athletics’ comes from the Greek word ‘athlos’ which means competition. The word ‘stadium’ comes from ‘stadion’ which means Greek’s unit of length equivalent to about 180 m.
- Many track events were also practised during ancient Olympics like marathon, discuss, javeline, long jump and various distance races. Modern track and field began in England by the beginning of the 18th century, mostly in the form of running and walking races.
- The first professional meet was held at Oxford in 1860. Cambridge University entered the scene when the first official British Athletic Championship was held in 1866.
- The sports then spread to the United States and Continental Europe. The first Modern Olympic Games in 1896 consisted mainly of track and field events.

A. Track Events include:
- Short distance race
- Middle distance race
- Long distance race
B. Field Events include:
- Throwing Events
- Jumping Events
Track Events:
Track events includes sprint or short distances races, middle distance races and long distance races.
Short distance races:
100 m , 200 m , and 400 m , 110 m hurdle and 100 m hurdle, and 400 m and 4 * 400 m relay races are sprint or short distance races.
Middle distance races:
800 m , 1500 m , races are middle distance races.
Long distance races:
3000 m , 5000 m , 10,000 m , 30,000 m steeple chase, cross country race, Marathon (42.195 km) 20 km walk and 50 km walk.
Field Events:
Field events include jumping and throwing events.
Jumping events:
Jumping events include long jump, High jump, Triple jump, Pole vault.
Throwing events:
Throwing events include shot put, discuss throw, hammer throw, javelin throw.

- Asian Games are also known as Asiad. It is a multi-sport competition every four years, in which players from different countries of Asia participate only.
- These games are decided by the Asian Olympic Council in the supervision of the International Olympic Council.
- In each competition, gold for the first place, silver for the second and bronze for the third is given, the tradition which was started in 1951.
- The first Asian Games were organized in Delhi, India, which again hosted the Games in 1982. The latest edition of Asian Games was organized in 2018 in Jakarta and Palembang cities of Indonesia.
- The next version will be in 2022, which will be organized by the city of Hangzhou, China.
