Introduction 

• The Athletic is a membership-based sports website covering professional and college teams in Chicago, Toronto, and more than 20 other cities in North America.
• The site covers national stories in football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and football, including a long mix of journalism, original reporting, and podcasts.
• Their business model is dedicated to collecting the sports section of local newspapers and reaching out to non-local fans who do not reach the local newspaper.

History 

1. The Athletic was founded by Alex Mather and Adam Hansman, a former co-worker of membership-based fitness company Strawa, creating “smarter coverage for die-hard fans”.
2. The company was created as an alternative to the struggling ad-supported model. Revenue depends on membership, not advertising revenue, to support athletic pursuits.

Launch 

• The site was originally launched in Chicago in January 2016, John Greenberg worked with Sahadev Sharma (Cubs) and Scott Powers (Blackhawks) as founding editors.
• Greenberg and Powers previously worked at ESPN Chicago, while Sharma left the Cubs of Baseball Prospectus vertically to join the website. The company participated in Y Combinator during the summer of 2016. 

Expand 

1. In October 2016, the Athletic expanded to another city, Toronto, to focus on Maple Leafs, Raptors and Blue Rays coverage. Athletic hired James Myrtle as editor-in-chief for Toronto.
2. Spent more than a decade as a player at The Globe and Mail before joining Athletic. A third city, Cleveland, launched in March 2017 with Jason Lloyd as editor in chief.
3. Athletic continued to expand the city in Detroit in June 2017. In August, the site hired Ken Rosenthal as a senior baseball writer after Fox Sports terminated its entire writing staff.

Funds 

• The first major funding was provided by Courtside Ventures, which provided $ 2.3 million in seed funding.
• In July 2017, the company raised $ 5.8 million in funding and announced its expansion into the Philadelphia and San Francisco-area sports markets. 
• In September 2017, Athletic expanded to Minnesota and Canada.  In February 2018, Athletic announced further expansion into three new cities — New York, Dallas, and Cincinnati — and launched baseball-only coverage in Houston, Los Angeles, San Diego, Arizona, and Kansas City.

Announcement 

1. In March 2018, the company announced a $ 20 million third round of funding led by Evolution Media.
2. Mather said that this money will be invested to increase coverage in new cities and increase the current workforce to 120.
3. In the same month, the site announced full coverage in Denver and Boston to begin in April. In Denver, Athletic hired several Denver Post reporters.
4. In Boston, early employees included the Beat Writer, working at the Beat Globe, the Boston Herald and the Springfield Republican web portal Massivo.
5. Adding to the college football coverage, Athletic added dedicated beat writers to major events such as Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.
6. In May, the site announced coverage of both domestic and international football.  In June 2018, The Athletic expanded coverage in Los Angeles and expanded to Buffalo, New York by hiring. Many reporters were purchased from The Buffalo News that same month.

Writers 

• Staff Writer: Adam Leventhal – Watford; Amy Lawrence – Arsenal; Andy Nailer – Brighton and Hove Albion; Andy jones.
• Flush with venture capital cash, Athletic offers attractive salaries to those journalists: $ 50,000 a year for entry-level journalists and six figures for more accomplished writers. (Full-time employees also get equity in the company.)

Cost 

1. The cost is $ 4.99 / month or $ 59.88 / year for a one-year membership. Athletic regularly offers discount codes, bringing this cost down even further.
2. The one-year “gift plan” (which Athletic’s website calls “the most popular”) costs $ 47.99 / year.

Review 

• Athletic gives you the best coverage of your football club to world class writers. Via a personal feed.
• I always get a little nervous about new journalism projects. This is partly because I expect them to fail, and it never happens.
• Brilliant, perhaps very good at what they do, but they are nothing without their stars, and this raw talent has to develop from somewhere.
• So yes, read athletic! I really mean that, it’s great. Maybe it’s a bit feature-heavy, but it’s still over the top.
