According to the UT Board of Regents meeting agenda, Steve Sarkeesian, the new head football coach at the University of Texas at Austin, is guaranteed to make at least $34.2 million over the course of his six-year contract.

The board is likely to approve Sarkeesian’s salary on Thursday. Sarkeesian, who was hired on January 2, will earn $5.2 million in his first year as coach and is guaranteed a raise of $200,000 each year. Sarkeesian’s compensation also includes two dealership cars, 20 hours of private airplane use per year, and a $250,000 relocation and temporary housing allowance. If he is still head coach as of December 31, 2024, he will receive an additional one-time payment of $1.2 million. All of these funds will come from Texas Athletics, whose budget includes revenue from a number of sources, including licensing, broadcast rights, ticket sales, and more. donors according to university spokesman JB Bird.

Team Coached

The work he did at USC earned him his first head coaching opportunity with Low Washington. He rebuilt the Huskies from the Pac-12’s basement for a team that posted a consecutive win record, though he struggled to turn the corner.

When USC fired Kiffin in 2013, athletic director Pat Haden targeted Sarkeesian as his replacement. While things looked promising for the head coach in 2014, everything fell apart when his alcoholism turned disastrous. After several incidents involving alcohol, the Trojans fired Sarkeesian for the cause.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban offered Sarkeesian a chance to re-establish his image as an analyst, and he brought that experience to his job as an offensive coordinator in Atlanta. The Falcons eventually made a coaching change at the top, so Sarkeesian followed an old pattern by replacing Kiffin as Crimson Tide’s OC. The extraordinary work in that role landed him a job in Texas.
