Visible are blue, three-ply and disposable. MLB protocol requires clubhouses and almost all non-playing settings to be in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. There is no need to wear one on the field. Marte, who is from the Dominican Republic – where the virus has locked down the island – abides by health directives.

Marte’s second mask, which is not visible, protects his heart. This personal protector is not optional. This keeps him from falling into the grip of depression and allows him to act as if everything is normal. He wears it when he is on the field, in the clubhouse and in the dugout.

Marte, 31, lost his wife Noelia Brazoban, 32, to a heart attack and the world he once knew was changed forever. Shields has helped Marte overcome the difficulties he has faced since childhood. This time they could have saved his life.

“I feel fine,” Marte said in Spanish during a recent interview on Noelia’s later life. “And I know I’m going to feel better being able to focus on something else.”

René Gayo, 57, the son of Cuban refugees and former international scouting director for Pirates, saw Marte twice in 2006, months before he signed him for $85,000 after a workout in San Pedro de Macoris in ’07 Was. Marte was tall and lean. He was strong and fast. Certainly, he wasn’t the exceptional shortstop his trainer Ramon “Papiro” Genao said he was. The solution was simple – just take him to the outfield.

Contract

After adding Eduardo Escobar and Mark Canha earlier in the evening, the Mets closed things down by signing center fielder Starling Marte to a four-year $78 million deal in what has been a memorable Black Friday.

MLB Insider Jon Heyman was previously on agreement and contract figures.

Marte led the league with 47 stolen bases last season while playing for the Miami Marlins and Oakland Athletics. The 33-year-old dropped .310/.381/.458 with .841 ops, 12 home runs and 55 RBI.

Although he posted a -4 defensive run saved at center last year, he is set to slide to this spot in the Mets’ outfield next season. This would put Brandon Nimmo in a corner position, but Marte has the ability to play in left field as well.

Now, the Mets have two speedy table setters at the top of their lineup in Marte and Nimmo, who should improve on the offense in 2022.

It’s been a week since Billy Appler was introduced as the general manager of the Mets. And it’s safe to say he hit the ground running on arrival.

Between Marte, Kanha and Escobar, the Mets spent a total of $124.5 million today.

Cubs

This time of year, you start hearing more and more thunder across the league. We’ll undoubtedly get our fair share of Chicago Cubs rumors — but for now, a recent report from Miami about the Marlins and veteran outfielder Starling Marte has our attention.

Up to this point, there have been no long-term discussions between Marte and the ball club led by Derek Jeter and Kim Ng. Ever since that report surfaced, Marte has made it clear that he wants to spend the rest of his career with Fish – but his desire to be a player doesn’t mean he won’t be on the block this summer.

Former Pirates star Marte is in the final year of his contract and could be one of the most valuable rentals available before the July 30 trade deadline. Year in, he’s hitting .337/.439/.547—and if the Marlins buy him, it looks like he could be one of the hottest items for contenders looking for an upgrade in the outfield.

For the Chicago Cubs, the biggest need is to start pitching. But the outfield, not counting Kris Bryant, has been pretty terrible this season as well. Injuries have had a major impact on several key people and the number of outfielders on the team is not great to say the least.
