Shaheen Holloway and his Saint Peter’s basketball team may have shocked the college basketball world by toppling second-seeded Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament’s first round Thursday.
What did Holloway do? He guided the Peacocks to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2011 and now their first Big Dance victory ever — and with an upset of one of the sport’s behemoths.

The St. Peter’s Peacocks entered Thursday night’s men’s NCAA tournament as a 15-seed.
They proceeded to dethrone one of the blue bloods of college basketball as the Peacocks played Cinderella and upset No. 2-seed Kentucky, 85-79. It was St. Peter’s first NCAA tournament win in school history, and it’s certainly a memorable one.
Daryl Banks III went off to the tune of 27 points, and teammate Doug Edert finished with 20 points as the Peacocks kept the highly favored Wildcats within reach all game.
Athletics:
Saint Peter’s only admission ticket into the NCAA Tournament was going to be an automatic bid. The Peacocks secured that entry with a 77-63 win over Fairfield in the quarterfinals; a 64-52 win over Quinnipiac in the semifinals; and a 60-53 win over Monmouth in the championship game.
Felt was Saint Peter’s athletics director in 2018, when he hired Holloway from the staff of Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard. They knew each other through Felt’s long tenure as an administrator in Seton Hall’s athletic department.
