Five years ago, Spencer Strider graduated from high school. Two years ago, the Braves drafted him. A year and a half ago, he began his first full season in professional baseball.

Now he’s making a big-league debut, throwing more innings than ever in his baseball life.

“When you’re in high school and college,” Strider said, “it’s definitely a small amount.”

More AJC coverage of the Braves
Up to this point, Strider has bowled 89-2/3 innings, with more to come. This is likely to be a big increase from the 96-1/3 frame in 2021 between his brief stints in the minor leagues and the majors. And if Strider remains healthy, he will more than double the total (81 innings) from his freshman season in college, which was his only full season at Clemson’s Mound. (He had Tommy John surgery in 2019 before COVID-19 ruined the 2020 season.)

The Braves have said that there will be no limit to Strider’s innings this year. Strider said the president of baseball operations, Alex Anthopoulos, who has said this publicly, also conveyed this to him. “I agree with that,” Strider said. “I’m glad he went ahead and said that.”
