Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani has reportedly been the victim of a “massive theft” worth millions of dollars, according to the Los Angeles Times. Ohtani and his representatives have reportedly accused his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, of stealing money from the athlete in order to place bets with an illegal bookmaker. The bookmaker is said to have been the target of a federal investigation.
The Dodgers fired Mizuhara, who was with Ohtani as recently as Wednesday during the Seoul Series in South Korea. Mizuhara has been working with Ohtani since he signed with the Angels in 2017.
“The Dodgers are aware of the media reports and are gathering information,” a spokesperson said in a statement late Wednesday. “The team can confirm that interpreter Ippei Mizuhara has been removed. The team has no further comment at this time.”

Baseball sensation Shohei Ohtani’s longtime interpreter Ippei Mizuhara has been fired by the Los Angeles Dodgers after being accused of theft related to illegal gambling.
According to ESPN, at least $4.5 million (£3.5 million) was transferred from Ohtani’s bank account to a bookmaker. Mr Ohtani is not accused of wrongdoing.
Mr. Mizuhara spoke to US Sports Network on Tuesday.
The news came as Ohtani made his regular season debut with the Dodgers.
The team’s senior communications director told the BBC that they were gathering information and that they “can confirm that interpreter Ippei Mizuhara has been removed”.
Sports betting is legal in 38 US states but is illegal in California.
Major League Baseball has its own policy that prohibits “any player, umpire, or official or employee of the club or league” from placing bets on any baseball game and from placing bets with illegal bookmakers.
Interpreter Salary
After Ohtani signed with the Angels in 2017, the team hired Mizuhara as his personal interpreter. ESPN said Mizuhara told the outlet this week that he is paid between $300,000 and $500,000 annually.
