In a suite above Court in Dallas, Sean Bradley meditates on a past life. Under the spotlight below, the gangly stalwarts—Krystaps Porzis, Boban Marjanovic, Bol—gallped and grinded as his 7’6″ rehearsal looked on, still and silent. 7’2″ as Boll swat a shot. Bradley’s wife, Carrie, brought him popcorn and filled a small Styrofoam bowl on his napkin-covered belly. 7’4″ Marjanovic ran back to the rescue and swallowed air; Bradley fainted and leaned his electric wheelchair to raise his blood pressure. 7’3″ Porzisz stung home a two-hander; Bradley covered a can of Dr. Pepper in his paw-like hands and sipped carefully.

On May 20, 2005, Bradley made his final move on the Mavs’ home court. After retiring at age 33, the No. 2 pick in the 1993 NBA Draft never reached his potential, although he was a tough, dependable defender. After 12 pro seasons, he faced a life devoid of basketball. On January 20, 2021, at the age of 48, Bradley took his last step, period. He is now facing a life devoid of much.

In the third quarter of that November 15 game at the American Airlines Center—the first Bradley attended since being paralyzed from the chest in a bicycle accident—Dallas’s vice president of basketball operations, Michael Finlay, visited the suite. Finlay and Bradley arrived in the early 2000s just before Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki, so it was no surprise that Finlay was the first to arrive with a text when news of the accident became public: Prayers are with you. You, great friend.

Confused but conscious after the spill, splashing on the ground and looking up at a crystalline sky, Bradley says he was a Passed through mental checklist. He could not move his arms or legs. He couldn’t sit. He had no control over his breath, which soon began to work. Only his eyes paid attention to his commands. Am I going to suffocate? he asked himself. Am I going to die slowly?”

Bradley said he spent three weeks in the ICU before he was moved to an inpatient neurological rehab wing, where Bradley’s 7’6” frame posed a unique challenge to the hospital’s medical staff.
