Ankle injury

Running back to Saxon Barkley, the New York Giants suffered an ankle injury during the first quarter of Sunday’s game against rival Cowboys. Barkley was taken off the field and out quickly (you can see the ugly injury here), and he will now be on the team’s injury reports week-to-week, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

The injury occurred when Barkley stepped on the foot of Dallas cornerback Jordan Lewis on a throw from Daniel Jones. This landed him in a boot post-game, and according to Rapoport, a low ankle sprain is the expected official diagnosis. Rapoport said Barkley will miss at least Week 6, but will try to return next week as he rests more.

Barkley has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons. The Penn State product suffered a torn ACL in Week 2 of 2020, forcing it to miss the entirety of that league year.

A return to normalcy was a hopeful forecast for Barkley, as he did not look the same during the team’s first few games of the 2021 campaign. Then, on Sunday, it all came to a head as Barkley was suffering a serious ankle injury.

Replacement

The Giants lost three of their most important players in the first half of Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys.

Saxon Barkley was ruled out against the Cowboys after injuring his left ankle in the first quarter. At the end of the second quarter, Daniel Jones was locked out after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit as he tried to barrel into the end zone. He was later thrown out with a jolt.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports that Barkley suffered a lower ankle sprain, according to a source. Rapoport says injury will likely take Barkley out for next week versus the Rams and, while they will have more tests, Giants RB are best portrayed as week-to-week. According to Rapoport, Barkley will only serve one week to miss
