Chicago Bears’ star linebacker Roquan Smith was visibly emotional as he reacted to his teammate Robert Quinn being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles—and he found out during a press conference.
Smith and Quinn were the two best players left on the Byers roster – who are set to rebuild their team after already trading several star players including Khalil Mack, Alan Robinson and Akim Hicks earlier this year – but now Smith is One of the only true star players on the team. Smith also requested to leave the team earlier this season after they had failed to come to an agreement on a contract extension.
And during a press conference before the Bears’ upcoming game against the Dallas Cowboys, Smith held a press conference and was made aware by a reporter that his teammate and friend Quinn had been traded to the Eagles.
When he was told about the news, he said: “It sucks. I’m gonna take a second for a second, if you don’t mind. I have a lot of respect for that guy, you know.” … oh no. . crazy.” Smith waited a few seconds before getting up and abruptly ending his press conference.

On Wednesday, Rokan Smith broke down in tears during his media session as he learned that the Bears would trade Robert Quinn to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a fourth-round pick.
Quinn meant a lot to Smith for him. Quinn was a respected leader in the locker room, and was voted this year’s team captain by the players.
To Quinn, Smith means equally to him.
“He’s my man,” Quinn said during his first press conference with the Eagles. “Ro [Roquan] you could say is like a little brother, you know? We got so tight as friends. To see that reaction, it really shows our love.
“To take a teammate and turn him into a sibling? You don’t get to do that often.”
The move was an effective step in the right direction to rebuild the Bears team. Quinn’s timeline is no longer suitable for the Bears, and his contract is an ugly number to pay for a team rebuilding with younger players.
Nonetheless, getting traded by rookie general manager Ryan Poles was not easy. The Poles were sympathetic about how the move would affect the locker room, and shared their feelings on the same day as the business.
“You know you’re twisting the fibers of your locker room, and that’s a big deal too,” Poles said. “To be completely honest with you, messing with it sucks.”
For players like Smith, who had a relationship with Quinn beyond football, it would be difficult to go about business as usual.
But, it is something the team will have to learn to do from Sunday, when the Bears play the Dallas Cowboys.
