Ronald Acuña Jr. received devastating news on Sunday night when he learned he would undergo season-ending knee surgery for the second time in less than three calendar years.

An MRI exam revealed that Acuña had a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the first inning of an 8-1 win over the Pirates at PNC Park on Sunday. The reigning National League MVP will have to go through the same long, arduous rehab process after tearing the ACL in his right knee midway through the 2021 season.

When Braves manager Brian Snitker was asked about the serious injuries suffered by some of his stars this year, he said, “I hate that it affects the young guys more than us.” “These guys love to play games. I hate it when something like this happens.”

Knee

Atlanta Braves outfielder and reigning National League Most Valuable Player Ronald Acuña Jr. will miss the remainder of the 2024 season after an MRI revealed a completely torn ACL, the team announced Sunday night. Acuna suffered the injury on a non-contact play while running the bases during a game against the Pirates on Sunday.

The Braves initially reported the injury as left knee soreness, but this proved to be overly optimistic.

Acuña appeared to try to redirect his left foot back toward second base and then collapsed in apparent pain. He briefly fainted and left the game after feeling discomfort in the left knee area.

Worth noting is that in 2021, Acuña suffered an ACL injury in his right knee – an injury that cost him nearly half of that season and then a large portion of 2022. Three years ago he suffered the aforementioned ACL strain in his left knee.

Injury

Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. tore the ACL in his left knee on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Braves announced the injury Sunday night after undergoing an MRI. He will miss the remainder of the season.

The injury occurred when Acuña led off on the base path from second base in the first inning of Atlanta’s 8–1 victory. He fell to the ground in obvious pain and clutched his left leg. He remained on the field for several moments while being cared for by trainers, but eventually limped off the field.

Acuna was injured in the top of the first inning of a scoreless game. He reached base with a leadoff double, then was injured while attempting to steal third base. The Braves left Sunday’s game with the third-best record in the NL at 30–20, six games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies (38–16) in the NL East.

Contract

The Braves have Acuna under contract through 2026 at $17 million per season. He also has two team options for 2027 and 2028 worth $17 million. Even if the Braves wait until 2028 to try to sign Acuna to an extension, he will only be 30 years old. at that point.

Is married

Surprising most teammates and manager Brian Snitker, Acuña married Maria Laborde, his longtime girlfriend and the mother of his two young sons, during a ceremony Thursday morning, which he said would take place in Los Angeles. She was born in a house on a farm in the nearby mountains.
