The battle for the Golden Knights going into the post season just gets tougher, as goaltender Robin Lehner is reportedly out for the rest of the 2021-22 season.

Or is he?

ESPN’s Emily Kaplan and The Athletic’s Jesse Granger both reported Friday that Lehner’s knee surgery was due at the end of the season. Granger also reported that the goalkeeper suffered a lower body injury in a game against the Flyers on March 8. Lehner chose to try and play the season while he was dealing with illness.

However, Golden Knights coach Pete DeBoer denied reports after the team’s practice, saying he viewed Lehner’s absence on Friday as a “maintenance day”.

Weight loss

Robin Lehner knew he could stay at his old weight and continue to be a successful goaltender.

But after turning 30 in July, Lehner began to think about his long-term future. And the Golden Knights goaltender realized that changes needed to be made if he wanted to play beyond the four years left on his contract.

Lehner went to work reshaping his body and was noticeably trimmer when the Knights opened training camp at City National Arena on Thursday.

“People can argue about it, but the last three years I’ve been heavy,” Lehner said. “Here in Vegas they like it flashy, so I need to be a little fast. We’ll see what I can do.”

Lehner is listed on the NHL’s official website at 240 pounds, but he said he had gained weight in 2018 after being treated for drug and alcohol addiction. He mentioned his medication for his bipolar 1 condition, as one of the reasons for the weight gain.
