Rickie Fowler on the Bubble at BMW Championship: Tour Championship Spot in Jeopardy

Rickie Fowler entered the 2026 BMW Championship knowing that every shot could have a major impact on his FedEx Cup playoff hopes. After three rounds at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Fowler finds himself outside the projected top 30 and in danger of missing the season-ending Tour Championship.

Fowler began the BMW Championship at No. 30 in the FedEx Cup standings, making him the final player inside the qualifying line for the 30-player field at East Lake. However, a frustrating third round has put his position at risk with only 18 holes remaining.

Rickie Fowler’s BMW Championship Struggles

Fowler carded a one-under 69 on Saturday and sits at one-under 209 after 54 holes. His round looked promising early, as the five-time PGA Tour winner made five birdies over his first 11 holes.

Four of those birdies came after quality iron shots that left him with relatively short opportunities. That stretch moved Fowler back toward his starting position in the FedEx Cup standings.

The momentum disappeared late in the round. Fowler bogeyed the 13th, 17th and 18th holes, turning what could have been a strong round into a disappointing finish.

The par-5 17th was particularly costly after Fowler found water off the tee. The late mistakes have left him projected to finish No. 32 in the FedEx Cup standings.

Fowler Could Miss the Tour Championship Again

Fowler’s current projected position is especially significant because he narrowly missed the Tour Championship last season.

In 2025, Fowler finished 32nd in the season-long standings despite recording a T-7 finish at the BMW Championship at Caves Valley. He is now facing another potential near-miss one year later.

Fowler is trying to reach the Tour Championship for the eighth time and make his first appearance at East Lake since 2023. With only one round remaining, he will need a strong Sunday performance and some help from the players around him to secure his place among the top 30.

What Fowler Needs on Sunday

The situation is straightforward but challenging. Fowler needs to play a strong final round at Bellerive and gain enough FedEx Cup points to move back into the top 30.

After Saturday’s round, Fowler was projected at No. 32, approximately 20.938 points behind the projected cutoff. Kurt Kitayama was projected at No. 31, while Bud Cauley sat at No. 33.

The battle around the cutoff means the standings can change significantly during Sunday’s final round.

Fowler understands the task in front of him.

“It’s pretty simple: just go play some good golf tomorrow,” Fowler said after his third round.

Why the Top 30 Matters for Fowler

Making the Tour Championship is about more than simply extending the FedEx Cup playoff run.

Players who qualify for East Lake receive valuable benefits heading into the following season, including exemptions connected to major championships. For Fowler, that could be particularly important because he has played in the Masters only once during the past six seasons.

Fowler’s best finish of the 2026 season so far is a tie for second at the Truist Championship, showing that he has been capable of producing strong results even if his season has not consistently put him inside the FedEx Cup’s top 30.

A Tour Championship appearance would also provide Fowler with another opportunity to build momentum heading into 2027.

Fowler Still Sees Positives in His Season

Despite his precarious position, Fowler does not view the season as a failure.

The 37-year-old has put together several solid finishes in 2026, and reaching the BMW Championship already secured him spots in the PGA Tour’s remaining signature events under the current schedule structure.

If he fails to advance to East Lake, Fowler indicated that he could use the fall portion of the schedule to improve his world ranking and prepare for the next season.

That possibility does not make Sunday’s round any less important, however.

BMW Championship Bubble Battle

Fowler is not the only established player fighting for a place in the Tour Championship.

With one round remaining, projections had Gary Woodland moving from No. 31 into the top 20 after a strong week. Patrick Cantlay also moved sharply upward after starting the BMW Championship at No. 43.

Sungjae Im was projected at No. 30 and remained right on the cutoff line.

Meanwhile, Kurt Kitayama, Fowler, Bud Cauley, Alex Noren and J.T. Poston were among the players projected to miss the top 30.

That makes Sunday’s final round one of the most consequential days of the FedEx Cup season for players on the bubble.

What Comes Next for Rickie Fowler?

Everything now comes down to Fowler’s final 18 holes at Bellerive Country Club.

A strong finish could send him back to Atlanta and give him access to the benefits that come with reaching the Tour Championship. A disappointing Sunday would end his playoff run and send him into the offseason earlier than expected.

Fowler’s message after Saturday was simple: play better golf.

For a player who has already experienced the frustration of narrowly missing East Lake, the pressure will be significant. But with the BMW Championship standings still capable of changing dramatically, Fowler remains within striking distance.

His quest for a return to the Tour Championship will be decided over the final round in St. Louis.
