Following his death in July 2024 at age 76, Richard Simmons’ cause of death has been revealed by his family.

Family spokesman Tom Estes told TODAY.com in a statement that the famous fitness icon of the 1970s and ’80s died of “complications of a recent fall” and heart disease. He said the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office called Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny Simmons with the autopsy results on August 21.

“The coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications of a recent fall and heart disease,” the statement said. “Toxicology reports were negative except for the medication Richard was given. The family would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.”

In a press release sent on August 22, the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office confirmed the family’s statement, stating that Simmons died from a “sequence of blunt traumatic injuries” and that “arteriosclerotic heart disease is a contributing condition.” The release states that the medical examiner’s full report will not be available until August 30.

“This morning, Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny received a call from the LA Coroner’s Office,” spokesman Tom Estes said in a statement released Wednesday. “The coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was ruled accidental due to complications from a recent fall and subsequent heart disease.

According to a family spokesperson, Richard Simmons’ cause of death was ruled accidental and the cause was “complications of a recent fall and heart disease was a contributing factor.”

In an August 22 statement from the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office, officials said Simmons “experienced a fall on July 11 and spent the next day in bed.”

He was found unconscious on his bedroom floor on the morning of July 13, and emergency responders were called, according to the coroner’s office.

“Death was determined at 0945 a.m.”
