In the minds of SMU’s coaches, that would be enough.

“Just execution,” Brewer said of his hopes for Stone. “Just make simple regular plays. It will blow you in the face when you have something amazing to throw. You don’t need to do anything except what’s right there, and the only play that matters is the next play. There’s no pressure from us that he has to go out and throw for 700 yards. We want to win. that’s all that matters.”

When quarterback Preston Stone left the field on a cart in the second quarter, SMU had a problem with the game not ending against Navy. It will be the AAC title game next week against Tulane. It was not looking good.

Stone’s pain was clearly audible and he immediately held his leg as the medical staff arrived. He took off his helmet and was escorted off the field moments later, at one point being consoled by coach Rhett Lashley.

None of this would make much of a difference to the outcome of Pony’s split against the over-mature midshipmen. When Stone got injured in the second quarter it clearly got out of hand and, obviously, there was no reason for him to return to the game.
The Paris Episcopal senior wasn’t going to play the second half as the game was already well in hand and Lashlee was probably finessing some things to win the conference championship next week.

Stone was 14-of-19 passing for 322 yards with three touchdowns. Whatever the Mustangs wanted to do in the game, Navy was not able to do anything to slow them down as they led 52–14 at halftime.
