Controversy

Phil Mickelson: Controversy| Liv contract| Saudi comments

Phil Mickelson won’t get a chance to repeat the PGA Championship one-on-one winner. The 2021 winner told the PGA of America that he would withdraw from the event.

His decision not to play in the tournament has already been long absent from the world of PGA golf. The last time Mickelson appeared in the PGA Tournament was in January at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Mickelson is dealing with the fallout of comments made about his criticism of the Saudi Arabian-based golf league, LIV Golf, and the PGA Tour.

“I am ready to get back to playing the game I love but this new path after 32 years is a new beginning, which is exciting for me at this stage of my career and clearly transformative, Not only for me, but ideally for the sport and my teammates… I am incredibly grateful for what this sport and the PGA Tour has given me. I would like to think that I have made a comeback too. But now I am excited about this new opportunity.

Mickelson, 51, will begin playing in a $25 million, 54-hole event at Centurion Golf Club on Thursday, but said he also plans to play in four major championships going forward

“I fully feel and respect that some people may disagree with this decision and have strong opinions and I sympathize with it,” he continued. “I have a renewed sense of and enthusiasm for the sport. I am incredibly grateful for the support of my fans, partners, friends and teammates and I hope that over time, those feelings, relationships and support continue to grow.”

Saudi comments

Rarely do groups of the most important people run away from Phil Mickelson. The 51-year-old has always been a magnet for both the rich and powerful, who fund the sport, as well as the down-to-earth and normal who flock to watch it. Following his comments last week about the Saudi Arabian government and the Super Golf League, he finds himself perhaps the loneliest person in the entire game.

First, KPMG announced that they were breaking up with Lefty. Workday, Amstel and even Callaway followed in his footsteps. The statements issued by these companies were similar. This one from Heineken, Amstel’s parent company, is the epitome of them all:

“We have decided to go our separate ways and end Amstel Light’s partnership with Phil Mickelson,” the spokesperson said. “We wish him the best.”
