Team Europe has a commanding lead over Team USA at the Ryder Cup in Rome this weekend, but there’s still plenty of drama to come, especially when Rory McIlroy is involved.
Patrick Cantlay defeated McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick to lead the United States to a 3–1 victory in Saturday’s final. Europe still led 10 1/2 – 5 1/2 after two days, and the U.S. would need a historic comeback to retain the Ryder Cup, but drama occurred on the 18th hole outside Marco Simone Golf Club.
During the 18th hole, Cantlay’s caddy Joe LaCava waved his hat at McIlroy as the Northern Irish golfer was putting. McIlroy looked none too pleased and his anger continued when he confronted LaCava in the car park. Most of the video of the incident had no audio, but fans believe McIlroy wanted to oust LaCava from the Ryder Cup. Team Europe teammate Shane Lowry had to step in and hold McIlroy back.

According to ESPN, the incident added to an already drama-filled day for Cantlay after a British report alleged he left his team in protest of players not being paid to compete in the Ryder Cup. Did not wear the cap issued by.
Fans present at Marco Simone Golf Club chanted “Salute to your bank account” at Cantlay as the reporting phase began.
The PGA Tour golfer denied the report and claimed he did not wear the hat because it did not fit him. After Cantlay hit his third birdie of the day, he pretended to take off his hat and salute the crowd. The remaining American players turned and waved their caps at the European fans.
It is unknown whether there is actually a rift in the Team USA locker room, but the drama builds anticipation for what could be a memorable final day of the Ryder Cup.
