China’s Pan Zhanle broke her own 100m freestyle world record at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday as she won a surprise gold medal in the event and defeated several champion rivals.

“I tried my best to get the best result. In the end I was very surprised that I broke the world record and it was a magical moment,” Pan told reporters through a translator.
Australia’s silver medalist Kyle Chalmers finished 1.08 seconds behind Pan, while David Popovici was 0.01 seconds behind for the bronze medal.
There was no easy path for Pan, who took off like a rocket and demolished the opening 50 meters in 22.28 seconds.
