The Padres vs Rockies matchup at Coors Field delivered another dramatic chapter in the season series, with the San Diego Padres holding on for an 8-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.
The win extended San Diego’s winning streak to eight games, while the Rockies suffered their eighth consecutive defeat. The result also continued the San Diego Padres’ dominance over Colorado this season, as they improved to 9-1 against the Rockies.
Padres Build an Early Lead
The Padres wasted little time putting pressure on Colorado starter Tomoyuki Sugano. Manny Machado opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning, giving San Diego an immediate advantage.
Fernando Tatis Jr. then delivered one of the biggest early blows. After Jackson Merrill singled, Xander Bogaerts walked and Jake Cronenworth drove in another run, Freddy Fermin added a sacrifice fly before Tatis launched a two-run homer to push the Padres ahead 5-1.
San Diego added another run in the third inning when Merrill doubled home Ty France, making it 6-1.
Sugano finished five innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Rockies Refuse to Go Away
Despite falling behind by five runs, the Colorado Rockies continued to battle. Casey Mize kept the Padres from extending their lead, allowing just two runs over five innings despite runners reaching base in every inning he pitched.
TJ Rumfield played a major role for Colorado, driving in runs and extending his on-base streak to 19 games, the second-longest streak in Rockies history.
The Rockies finally made their biggest push in the sixth inning. Jake McCarthy delivered a two-run triple, and Connor Norby followed with a sacrifice grounder to bring Colorado within 6-4.
Late Drama at Coors Field
The comeback attempt continued in the seventh when Cole Carrigg crushed a 96-mph pitch 424 feet to right field. His eighth home run of the season cut the Padres’ lead to 7-6.
San Diego responded with an insurance run in the eighth, but Colorado answered again. Tovar singled before Norby doubled to make it an 8-7 game.
The Rockies had a chance to complete the comeback in the ninth, but San Diego closer Mason Miller shut the door. Kyle Karros reached on an infield single that deflected off Miller, but Adael Amador’s high-bouncing grounder ended the game.
Miller recorded two strikeouts in the ninth to earn his 37th save of the season.
Padres Continue Their Dominance
The victory was especially significant for the San Diego Padres, who have now won eight straight games. Their 9-1 record against Colorado this season highlights just how difficult the matchup has been for the Rockies.

Although the Rockies lost, their late offensive surge showed the fight within the lineup. They erased most of a five-run deficit and had the tying run at the plate in the final inning.

Kyle Freeland is scheduled to return from the injured list and start for Colorado. He enters the matchup with a 4-10 record and a 6.37 ERA.
