The Minnesota Vikings have added a familiar NFL name to their wide receiver room, signing Odell Beckham Jr. to the practice squad as they prepare for Week 5.
The move comes just one week after the New York Giants released Beckham following a brief reunion that produced no receptions. Despite Minnesota entering Week 5 with a perfect 4-0 record, the Vikings believe OBJ could provide valuable veteran depth and another potential playmaker for an offense that has struggled to consistently produce.

ToggleOdell Beckham Jr. Vikings Signing Comes After Giants Release
The Odell Beckham Jr. Vikings signing was announced Wednesday, October 7, with the veteran receiver joining Minnesota’s practice squad.
Beckham returned to the Giants during the offseason and made New York’s 53-man roster. However, he appeared in only three games, playing 19 offensive snaps without recording a catch. The Giants targeted him just once before releasing him on September 29.
The Vikings moved quickly.
According to reports, Minnesota contacted Beckham immediately after his release and showed significant interest in bringing him aboard. The move gives the Vikings an opportunity to evaluate the veteran receiver without immediately committing him to a major role on the active roster.
Why Did the Vikings Sign OBJ?
At first glance, the OBJ Vikings move may seem surprising because Minnesota is 4-0. However, the team’s offensive production has created a need for additional depth at receiver.
Justin Jefferson is dealing with a left ankle injury suffered in Week 3. He missed Week 4 and his availability for the Vikings’ Week 5 matchup remains uncertain.
Minnesota had already added Jauan Jennings to its receiving group, but his production has been limited. That created an opening for another experienced receiver.
Beckham could potentially provide that option if he can quickly adjust to Minnesota’s offense.
Beckham Has Familiar Connections in Minnesota
One factor working in Beckham’s favor is his familiarity with people inside the Vikings organization.
Beckham and head coach Kevin O’Connell were together with the Los Angeles Rams during their Super Bowl-winning 2021 season. Beckham also previously worked with Minnesota assistant head coach Frank Smith during his time with the Miami Dolphins.
That familiarity could make the transition easier for both sides.
Beckham also has a relationship with Justin Jefferson, giving him another connection within the Vikings’ receiver room.
Can Odell Beckham Jr. Still Make an Impact?
The biggest question surrounding Odell Beckham Jr. is whether he can still provide meaningful NFL production.
His recent numbers are modest. Beckham did not play during the 2025 season and caught only nine passes for 54 yards with Miami in 2024.
However, his 2023 season with the Baltimore Ravens showed that he could still contribute. He finished that campaign with 35 receptions for 565 yards and three touchdowns.
His career numbers remain impressive. Beckham has recorded 575 receptions, 7,987 receiving yards and 59 touchdowns during his NFL career.
The peak of his career came with the Giants, where he made three straight Pro Bowls to begin his NFL tenure. In 2015, he posted 1,450 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns before following that with 1,367 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2016.
Minnesota does not necessarily need that version of Beckham. Even a smaller contribution could give the Vikings another experienced target.
Vikings Could Elevate Beckham If Jefferson Misses Week 5
The immediate storyline in the Vikings news cycle is whether Beckham could be elevated from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.
Minnesota’s current receiving production helps explain the decision.
T.J. Hockenson entered Week 5 as the team’s leading receiver with 22 catches for 195 yards and one touchdown. Jefferson had 13 receptions for 179 yards and two touchdowns, while Jordan Addison had 163 receiving yards.
If Jefferson is unable to return, Beckham could become an intriguing depth option.
Still, joining the practice squad does not guarantee Beckham will play in Week 5. Minnesota can first evaluate his conditioning, familiarity with the playbook and ability to contribute before making that decision.
What the Odell Beckham Jr. Vikings Move Means
For Minnesota, the signing is a low-risk opportunity to add experience to an offense that needs more production.
For Beckham, it represents another chance to extend his NFL career after his second stint with the Giants ended without a reception.
The Odell Beckham Jr. Vikings partnership could ultimately become more significant if Beckham earns an elevation to the active roster and proves capable of helping the undefeated Vikings offense.
For now, OBJ is on the practice squad. The next step will be determining whether he can turn that opportunity into a meaningful role in Minnesota.
