The grand final had traditionally been played on Sunday afternoons, however from 2001-2007 the game was moved to an evening start to make the most of prime time television. Between 2008-2012, a compromise was reached between official broadcaster Nine Network’s preferred starting time of 7 pm and the traditional starting time of 3 pm, with the grand final beginning at 5 pm AEDT. However, in 2013 the evening start resumed and has occurred every year since.

For another week the dream of a fairytale finish lives on. Wayne Bennett’s last game in charge of South Sydney and Adam Reynolds, the local hero, who many will say should never have been allowed to leave Redfern, sign off as winners in the cardinal and myrtle.

Picture Bennett’s gyrating like he’s back on the dancefloors of Warwick and it’s 1968 again, just this time drenched in Gatorade at Suncorp Stadium. Or Reynolds in tears as he signs off for the club he has given so much to.

Winners 2020

The series was played over four weekends in October, culminating in the 2020 NRL Grand Final on 25 October 2020 at ANZ Stadium. The Grand Final was ultimately won by the second-placed Melbourne Storm, who defeated the minor premiers the Penrith Panthers 26–20.
