Noahkai Banks has made a major decision regarding his international future, with the 19-year-old defender accepting a call-up to the Germany U-21 national team.
The FC Augsburg center-back had been eligible to represent both the United States and Germany because of his family background. Banks was born in Honolulu to an American father and German mother, making him a highly sought-after dual-national prospect.
Noahkai Banks Chooses Germany
Banks has accepted Germany’s U-21 call-up and is expected to file a one-time international switch. Germany U-21 coach Antonio Di Salvo confirmed that Banks and fellow dual national Louey Ben Farhat had chosen to represent Germany after discussions with the federation.
The timing is significant because Germany’s U-21 team has European Championship qualifying matches during the September-October international window. Banks’ switch would allow him to continue representing Germany at the youth level and potentially pursue a senior international career with the country.
Once the one-time switch is approved under the applicable international eligibility rules, Banks would no longer be available to represent the USMNT.
Banks’ International Background
Noahkai Banks has already gained considerable experience with United States youth national teams. He collected 12 combined appearances across the U.S. U-17, U-19 and U-20 teams.
His performances also earned him a senior USMNT opportunity. Banks was called into camp last September for matches against South Korea and Japan, although he did not appear in either game.
In the months that followed, Banks reportedly declined opportunities from both the United States and Germany while considering his international future. He had previously indicated that he expected to make a decision before the end of 2026.
That decision has now arrived with his Germany U-21 commitment.
What It Means for the USMNT
Banks had been viewed as a promising option for the United States’ next generation of center-backs. His development at FC Augsburg had made him an increasingly notable American prospect playing in Germany’s Bundesliga environment.
His decision means USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino will have to look elsewhere for defensive options as the team builds its squad for the next phase of the international cycle.
For Germany, meanwhile, Banks represents another young dual-national talent who could develop into a long-term defensive option.
